How to keep Your Black Russian Terrier Healthy

Big Dog | November 29th, 2011

Black Russian Terrier that are well-bread and are cared for have lesser chances in having illnesses compared to those who have been inaccurately bred and not unkempt dogs. Never forget to get your Black Russian Terrier to get all the vaccines necessary as to prevent the major canine diseases. The vaccines are usually given at the age of 8-12 weeks when the antibody protection that came from the mother’s milk wears off. This will be taken care of by your trusted veterinarian and also schedule a regular visit with him.

Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terrier is practically a very healthy breed. But you still need to bring your pet to an expert veterinary that will do the primary assessment on your dog’s health and the setting of the foundation care. The vet will also determine your dog’s nutrition needs; the food you give to your dog plays a huge role in keeping your dog healthy. Feeding your dog nutritious foods will give him ample of energy that must be released on a daily physical and mental exercise to avoid energy to build up that yields to issues relating to his behavior, allow your Black Russian Terrier to have about an hour of playtime. Also, pay special attention to the dog’s dental care to prevent building up of tartar and plaque that causes cavities and tooth decay.

And also, be familiar with the warning signs of illness, if alarmed visit your veterinarian for urgent medical care. The illnesses that you should keep an eye for because it is most likely to occur are orthopedic problems like hip and elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts of eye disorders. Black Russian Terrier is also been known to be prone to bloating for it is better to feed the dog in several small meals rather than giving a one-time big time meal.

Black Russian Terrier meeting wolves and bears

Big Dog | March 11th, 2011

Look at that adorable Black Russian Terrier! He is so eager to play with the wolves, but afraid to mess with the bears. I can understand him for sure. Those bears look friendly, but I wouldn’t try to get over the fence. Despite the fact that this dog seems a bit awkward with those huge animals, I am sure that he would protect his family in case of need.

Is a Black Russian Terrier a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 20th, 2010

Definitely yes, if you would like to have a very intelligent and capable companion that is the happiest when trained for some work like agility, protection or obedience from the first months. These dogs require long, daily walks and exercise; therefore the best for them is a big house with a large, fenced yard.

They can make excellent watchdogs or provide excellent protection for the whole family with their strong and stable temperament and loyalty. They can accept other dogs and pets around them if they are provided with proper socialization from the early months. The training of this dog is very easy, since they are clever and eager to learn everything.

Black Russian Terriers have a very dense and long (around 2-3 inches) hair that requires at least a weekly, full grooming with a brush. They also need clipping several times a year and you should also pay attention to oral care and cleaning of the dog’s ears.

All in all these dogs are very capable and eager to be trained, therefore I advise to provide them a big yard and daily exercise to keep them happy.

I hope this short article will help you decide whether the Black Russian Terrier is the right breed for you.

A little history of Black Russian Terriers

Big Dog | September 8th, 2010

Who created this breed and why? If I tell you the name of the kennel, you will probably get the answer to all your questions.

Red Star Kennel.

Yes, BRTs were first bred in the USSR for military and working purposes. The breed was created by crossing mostly the Airdale Terrier, Caucasian Ovcharka, Newfoundland, Schnauzer, Rottweiler and the Moscow Water Dog. About 17 breeds were involved altogether in the experiment. Breeding Black Russians was a privilege of the state-owned Red Star Kennel until the year of 1957.

The breed is recognized by FCI since 1984, and by the AKC since 2004.

What makes a good Black Russian Terrier Breeder?

Big Dog | August 25th, 2010

First of all, a good breeder does his job as a “hobby”. Unlike puppy millers, real breeders breed puppies on a limited basis: the goal is not have more puppies and more money, but to have healthy, lively young little dogs. Their goal is to improve the breed and ‘produce’ loving family pets. They would also stand behind the pup throughout its life, taking a lifetime responsibility. Last but not least: a good breeder always keeps in mind the interests of the puppy and not especially the potential buyers’.
Europuppy works only with reliable, honest, good breeders.
