A little history of Black Russian Terriers
Who created this breed and why? If I tell you the name of the kennel, you will probably get the answer to all your questions.
Red Star Kennel.
Yes, BRTs were first bred in the USSR for military and working purposes. The breed was created by crossing mostly the Airdale Terrier, Caucasian Ovcharka, Newfoundland, Schnauzer, Rottweiler and the Moscow Water Dog. About 17 breeds were involved altogether in the experiment. Breeding Black Russians was a privilege of the state-owned Red Star Kennel until the year of 1957.
The breed is recognized by FCI since 1984, and by the AKC since 2004.
