Definitely yes, if you would like to have a very intelligent and capable companion that is the happiest when trained for some work like agility, protection or obedience from the first months. These dogs require long, daily walks and exercise; therefore the best for them is a big house with a large, fenced yard.

They can make excellent watchdogs or provide excellent protection for the whole family with their strong and stable temperament and loyalty. They can accept other dogs and pets around them if they are provided with proper socialization from the early months. The training of this dog is very easy, since they are clever and eager to learn everything.

Black Russian Terriers have a very dense and long (around 2-3 inches) hair that requires at least a weekly, full grooming with a brush. They also need clipping several times a year and you should also pay attention to oral care and cleaning of the dog’s ears.

All in all these dogs are very capable and eager to be trained, therefore I advise to provide them a big yard and daily exercise to keep them happy.

This is something of a contradiction. Why? Well these dogs were bred to be strong, dominant and somewhat aggressive. Yet, BRTs are confident, calm, highly intelligent, brave and loyal all at once. Ideal representatives of this breed should never be timid. They will not for second hesitate to defend those that they love if they believe that person is under some sort of threat. The BRT may seem aloof, but this is mostly with strangers, This huge dog loves and needs human companionship; and so it bonds deeply to its family. They are wary of strangers and take a long time to warm up to unfamiliar people, thus they make excellent guard dogs. BRTs are dominant by nature and need confident owners who have experience handling similar dogs. Therefore their rather pradoxical nature makes them unique and highly sought-after. A great dog…strong and dominant, yet loving and calm.

The Black Russian Terrier has a numerous number of names. It also goes by the name of: Black Terrier; Tchiorny Terrier; Chornyi (meaning black in Russian); Russian Bear Schnauzer and Russian Black Terrier. The Black Russian Terrier was developed in the former USSR by the state for use as a military -and working dogs. The breeding stock was mostly imported from the occupied countries; including East Germany. So what breeds were united, to develop this unique breed? Well, the Airedale Terrier, the Caucasian Ovcharka,the Rottweiler, the Newfoundland, the Giant and Standard Schnauzers as well as the now extinct Moscow Water Dog all played a role in uniting the pieces of the puzzle that was to make up the gene-pool of the Black Russian Terrier. A pretty awesome cocktail combination!

Power, force, intelligence can be found in all these afore-mentioned breeds! It was bred for working ability, rather than appearance. It was bred solely by the state-owned Red Star Kennel until 1957, when some puppies were sold to civilian breeders. These breeders began to breed for looks as well, since the original was rather plain. It was made to a look more attractive, while retaining its working ability. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1984. These days it is becoming more popular outside of its native Russia. The AKC only recognized this breed as a purebred breed of its own in 2004. A rather new and unique breed!
