Is the Russian Terrier a Healthy Breed?

D Dog Fan | April 7th, 2008

Due to exceptionally careful and meticulous breeding practices of this breed, the only two health problems that seem to plague the Black Russian Terrier are elbow and hip problems in the form of Dysplasia as well as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). If the ears are not properly cared for, and cleaned, this breed tends to develop Otitis (inflammation of the middle ear) as well. So take good care of your BRT. Although every dog is different, just bear in mind these few diseases that have been catalogued about the breed.

Feeding your Black Russian Terrier…

It is always advisable to find a premium diet that is high in nutritional value. If it agrees with your dog’s digestive system and keeps its coat shiny and healthy as well as his doggy-breath okay, then that should be the winner for both of you. Of course you could always opt for going all natural with the revolutionary BARF diet. It is not as bad as it sounds, worry not! The basis behind the BARf diet is basically to give only organic and raw food to your large dog. It has also been known to prevent bone diseases, and play and active role in healthy digestion – as nature intended. But like with most things, the bottom line is to develop that which suits you and your dog the best. It is advisable to get a large stainless steel bowl for your Black Russian Terrier, since it is easy to clean, and is dishwasher -safe as well.

The Temperament of a Black Russian Terrier….

This is something of a contradiction. Why? Well these dogs were bred to be strong, dominant and somewhat aggressive. Yet, BRTs are confident, calm, highly intelligent, brave and loyal all at once. Ideal representatives of this breed should never be timid. They will not for second hesitate to defend those that they love if they believe that person is under some sort of threat. The BRT may seem aloof, but this is mostly with strangers, This huge dog loves and needs human companionship; and so it bonds deeply to its family. They are wary of strangers and take a long time to warm up to unfamiliar people, thus they make excellent guard dogs. BRTs are dominant by nature and need confident owners who have experience handling similar dogs. Therefore their rather pradoxical nature makes them unique and highly sought-after. A great dog…strong and dominant, yet loving and calm.

The Russian Dog…

The Black Russian Terrier has a numerous number of names. It also goes by the name of: Black Terrier; Tchiorny Terrier; Chornyi (meaning black in Russian); Russian Bear Schnauzer and Russian Black Terrier. The Black Russian Terrier was developed in the former USSR by the state for use as a military -and working dogs. The breeding stock was mostly imported from the occupied countries; including East Germany. So what breeds were united, to develop this unique breed? Well, the Airedale Terrier, the Caucasian Ovcharka, the Rottweiler, the Newfoundland, the Giant and Standard Schnauzers as well as the now extinct Moscow Water Dog all played a role in uniting the pieces of the puzzle that was to make up the gene-pool of the Black Russian Terrier. A pretty awesome cocktail combination!

Power, force, intelligence can be found in all these afore-mentioned breeds! It was bred for working ability, rather than appearance. It was bred solely by the state-owned Red Star Kennel until 1957, when some puppies were sold to civilian breeders. These breeders began to breed for looks as well, since the original was rather plain. It was made to a look more attractive, while retaining its working ability. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1984. These days it is becoming more popular outside of its native Russia. The AKC only recognized this breed as a purebred breed of its own in 2004. A rather new and unique breed!
