How to avoid my Black Russian Terrier being jealous of my new born baby?

Big Dog | June 17th, 2010

Is it normal, anyway?!

Yes, it is. Just imagine the situation from the point of view of your Black Russian. He is part of the family, often treated as “the kid”, and then, suddenly, a new creature arrives and takes all the attention of his beloved family. It is quite similar to what older children feel, when a little brother/sister arrives. One of the differences is just that the dog can’t speak English :)

Actually, if we are aware of this ‘problem’ in advance, the situation can be handled, but it needs consciousness and to be started in time, long before the baby’s arrival. Let’s see how we can prepare our Black Russian Terrier for the new family member.

If your dog’s daily routine has to be changed with the baby’s arrival (it probably will), you should start changing the rules much earlier, giving him plenty of time to get used to the new set up. This way it isn’t going to be so sudden and shocking. If your Black Russian hasn’t really been trained before, it’s high time to start. He should learn at least a few commands, like sit, stay, etc. This way, he’ll be easier to handle.

Many families worry about their dog endangering the health of the child, so the best thing to do is to take your pet to the vet, get him checked and get some advice. Get your Black Russian Terrier used to the new smells, sounds in advance (blankets, lotions, toys). It’s also a good idea, that just after your baby was born, send home a blanket that the baby had been in, so your dog can experience the child’s smell in advance. It is very important to know that your  Russian Terrier will get a lot less attention from the mother, so when taking the baby home for the first time, the mother should greet the dog, so it is better if someone else is carrying the baby.

It is also a good idea not to leave them alone together at the first times, until your Black Russian Terrier feels comfortable with the baby, because, for example, it is very possible that the dog won’t tolerate the child’s crying very well in the beginning. You have to teach him that this is a normal sound, and you should motivate him not to bark (with treats, for example).

And the most important rule for last, maybe it seems too obvious, but it’s still worth mentioning: try to give as much attention to your Russian Terrier as you can. The point is that he has to feel that you do care about him. If you keep this in mind, most probably there will be no problem. You could also try Preparing Fido, which is an amazing collection of Baby sounds designed especially to get your dog ready for the arrival of the new Baby!

How to care for a Black Russian Terrier

Big Dog | January 22nd, 2010

Responsibility of caring for a breed should not be limited to simply feeding him, cleaning up after him, or bathing him. Care ideally encompasses both the physical and mental health, wherein one without the other will be detrimental for the dog. Take the Black Russian Terrier for example. These 80 to 140 pound dogs need to have the black coats brushed at least 30 minutes on a weekly routine as well as bringing them to a groomer every month and a half. Ears must also be inspected regularly and cleaned of any dirt or dead, loose hairs.

Being stubborn as they are intelligent, obedience training should start while young to show them who is in charge as well as socialization with family to accept people. Another aspect to consider is that they are working dogs with a strong work ethic that needs to be fed with tasks and work for it to be fulfilled. Just letting them lay around will dull their minds and hearts. So try to take each aspect into consideration when taking complete and genuine care for a dog.

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

Black Russian Terrier puppy

Money isn’t easy nowadays and without consulting professional breeders or the canine grapevine, the price you pay now maybe just the tip of the iceberg. The Black Russian Terrier comes with a hefty price tag of $2500 but may not come with a “how-to” comprehensive guide.

Here are some things that one should know about the breed: weighing 80 to 140 pounds, these sheepdogs have black coats with occasional gray hairs. Although they make great intelligent pets, they can be very stubborn so training at a young age is advisable. Grooming composed of 30 minutes a day of brushing and cleaning of ears to avoid infection. The best way to exercise them is to give tasks or simply allow them to run free.

How to care for a Black Russian Terrier

Ann | October 22nd, 2009

Caring for a Black Russian Terrier has its own challenges. To further understand the function of the breed, it was developed to be a military or work dog, used for guarding borders, prisons and even military bases. A dog like this needs a firm handler for it will push its boundaries if it has a weak master.

These dogs need to be physically and emotionally stimulated to be productive and devoted house pets. Due to its work ethic and innate desire to work, it is happy and content when it has a job or task to do. They are a very energetic breed that needs plenty of exercise to channel it positively. Lack of activity will leave it hyperactive and destructive to its surroundings. Health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy and would need regular check-ups.

The breed demands respect from its owner as well as attention and affection. They are not truly happy unless they are in the company of their human family.
